MAN Engines Expands 30-Litre Marine Portfolio with New D3872 Auxiliary Engine for On-Board Power

MAN Engines has expanded its 30-litre marine portfolio with the launch of the new MAN D3872 Auxiliary engine, now available for on-board power generation and diesel-electric propulsion systems. The latest addition strengthens the company’s offering for maritime operators seeking high performance, compact design and compliance with global emission standards.

Based on the proven 30-litre V12 platform, the new auxiliary variant has been specifically developed for generator sets and integrated energy systems on board. It complements MAN’s established range of main propulsion engines and enables shipyards and operators to rely on a technically uniform engine family across diverse maritime applications.

Two power ratings are available for auxiliary operation. The MAN D3872 LE32x delivers 840 kW at 50 Hz, while the MAN D3872 LE33x provides 960 kW at 60 Hz. These outputs allow flexible integration into conventional on-board electrical systems as well as diesel-electric propulsion concepts. The engine’s fast and stable load-switching behavior ensures reliable power supply, even during sudden load changes, making it particularly suitable for demanding continuous-load operations.

Thanks to its compact architecture and high power-to-installation-space ratio, the D3872 Auxiliary is well suited to confined engine rooms. This makes it an attractive solution for workboats, offshore vessels, ferries and large yachts, where space efficiency and modular energy concepts are increasingly important. The engine can be deployed either as a pure on-board genset unit or as part of a diesel-electric propulsion system, offering additional flexibility to shipbuilders and system integrators.

A key feature of the new auxiliary variants is compliance with globally relevant maritime emission standards. The engine is available in IMO Tier II, IMO Tier III and EU Stage V configurations. It utilizes MAN’s modular and space-saving exhaust gas aftertreatment system, which can be equipped with SCR or SCR-DPF technology depending on operational requirements. This flexibility allows the engine to meet strict environmental regulations while optimizing available installation space, making it suitable for international offshore operations as well as regulated coastal and inland waterways.

The 30-litre platform has already proven itself across a wide range of maritime and stationary applications. In the workboat segment, the D3872 engine family is established as a powerful and reliable main propulsion system. In the yacht market, it was recently introduced as the MAN V12X series, offering outputs of up to 1,618 kW (2,200 hp). The platform also forms the basis of the MAN E3872 gas engine used in stationary power generation. With the addition of the auxiliary variant, operators now benefit from a fully integrated engine family covering propulsion, on-board power and hybrid solutions within a single technological framework.

“With the new MAN D3872 as an engine for on-board units, we are consistently rounding off our 30-litre portfolio,” said Reiner Roessner, Head of Sales at MAN Engines. “This provides operators and shipyards with a fully integrated, highly efficient and future-proof engine family for a wide range of maritime applications – from main propulsion to powerful on-board power supply. The MAN D3872 Auxiliary is a modern solution that will reliably accompany our customers for many years to come.”

With this expansion, MAN Engines now covers a comprehensive performance spectrum. The auxiliary portfolio ranges from 280 kW to 960 kW (381 hp to 1,306 hp), complementing propulsion engines spanning 221 kW to 1,618 kW (301 hp to 2,200 hp). The new MAN D3872 Auxiliary engine is now available for order, further reinforcing MAN Engines’ position as a provider of efficient, future-ready maritime power solutions.
